  1. Ouch! It will be a tough game for Marciniak. First leg was very physical, intense match with some cynical, unsporting behaviours. I wish both teams GOOD LUCK!

    1. What are the odds of 22 players starting and finishing the match regardless of how brutal or violent things get. The fact that it's a semi final in a UEFA competition, I'd say 100% that 22 start and finish.

    2. Marciniak proved he can show straight red cards for SFP in the past. He is the referee who doesn't hesitate and take his decisions almost immediately. I hope it will be a good performance.

      Delete
    3. Ray we can only hope that he maintains his style. FIFA and UEFA are notorious for forcing a certain style onto their Referee's.
And currently, that "style" is straight late 80's early 90's English Football garbage.

  2. Absolutely deserved achievement for Hațegan, while Marciniak gets another EL semifinal as it happened one year ago.

  3. My club Ajax doesn't need the aid of a referee. I wish Lyon good luck. I am in the away corner of the stadium.

  4. Very deserved appointments for both officials. I also like that UEFA did not appoint Marciniak for a UCL semifinal this season. As he is only 36-years old, there are plenty of years to come and to stay motivated.

I am also glad for Hategan, who recommended himself for higher tasks in the combatted duel between S04 and Ajax in the quarterfinals. The only hope I have is that there won't again be 54 free-kicks (with some of them in the extra time, of course).

  5. Very happy for Marciniak... But Brych missing out is surprising for me!!

    1. His group stage performances as well as Porto-Juventus were actually good. So it is indeed surprising. He had to be ruled for Atlético-Real, I think, due to last season's controversy in Camp Nou PLC was a direct witness of. Remember the fuss Diego Simeone created in the aftermath. So probably UEFA had to protect Brych here. Juventus-Monaco was possible, though. But who knows. Maybe they agreed on him for the UCL final. I don't believe in it, though.

      Delete
    2. Juventus-Monaco for Björn Kuipers is pretty justified IMO considering some very good performances in the previous games and personally I feel Kuipers, Çakir and even Mateu Lahoz overall enjoyed a better European season than Brych so they absolutely deserve their appointments... But Brych at least could've been given an EL SF ahead of Karasev or Hategan I feel so that comes as a bit of a surprise!!

    1. I don't understand. Is that a joke by Thomson showing a RC?

      Delete
    2. Seriously.. And if it's a joke it's a really poor one!!

      Delete
    3. The AR took it with a smile so I believe it is not up to us to judge the quality of the joke :) Depends on how the team functions and works internally.

      Delete
    4. I don't really see how a referee showing he has a sense of humour is bad...

      Delete
    5. I didn't mean it that way.. But I personally feel that showing a red card to a sick AR isn't a great way to show sense of humour.. That said it entirely depends on the refereeing team and their relationship so I shouldn't be judging it!! 🙂

    1. Strange, can you find some reasons for that? He had been announced as VAR.

    2. Nobody knows anything...

    3. Replacing Brych? Or another referee?

      Delete
    4. Brych has not been appointed in Bundesliga, so I assume he should be in South Korea. No appointments for Borsch and Lupp as well. However, it is possible that for some reasons a selected official is not available. We will know more by reading the appointments.

      Delete
    5. Maybe they need more on-field officials... Maybe Marciniak is a sure bet for Russia 2018 and hence FIFA might want to give him maximum experience of VAR beforehand??? 🤔

      Delete
    6. Also maybe they're withdrawing Kuipers from South Korea consideration he had a very poor night in Turin??? 😭

      Delete
    7. Actually it makes a lot of sense to test Marciniak on FIFA level, as he is surely a strong candidate for the WC.
It was surprising, that he was only a VAR in the first place.

      Delete
    8. Exactly... And even more surprising when Karasev was appointed to be in the middle ahead of Marciniak... I know Karasev will be pushed for Russia 2018 for all kinds of obvious reasons but surely Marciniak is way ahead in terms of big match experience as well as performance!!

    1. It would be nice to know what happened with Demetrios Masias.
Fran Jović, as reserve referee, got a quarterfinal.

      Delete
    2. Strange that a support referee gets the quarter-final. Either his performance in the last matchday was so great or others' performances were below par.

      Delete
    3. More interesting if you remember that Jovic was referee in last year U17 EURO and he also got quarter final match. Could be UEFA is looking for new Croatian top referee?

  10. Wonderful first 25 mn of Marciniak crew. Self confidence and clear line. 2 good and valuable YC for Lyon. Intelligence and psychological approach. Good offside decisions by AR. Well done !

    ReplyDelete
  11. Penalty in favor of Lyon was a correct call, very naive foul by defender, who was unable to reach the ball. But, more important, NO FLAG by AR1 when Lyon scored again in the last action of first half. If I'm not wrong, a top class decision. Player was on level with the ball.

    1. Agree Chefren. I see on polish ref the future European top 1 ref : what do you think guys?

      Delete
    2. If he continue his development like he did in recent years, he'll be that for sure. Especially when the big hitters like Kuipers, Atkinson, Rizzoli and so on retired in a few years. It will be interesting, who will be the top refs apart of Marciniak. Hot tips are Hategan (who has a calm match today, good performance until now in 53'), Zwayer, Makkelie...
So I already found some guys who are able to referee the top clashes in the upcoming years. I don't have to worry ;)

      Delete
    3. Makkelie will be one I'd like to keep my eyes on!! Michael Oliver is another hugely exciting prospect!!

  12. First half very convincing bg Marciniak. Full control. Easy going with players. Natural authority and very harmonious card management. Soft call on penalty but largely acceptable. No card needed here. Good offside calls prior 1-0 and moreover just before 2-1. Great ref and great refereeing ! Congrats Ray 😎

    1. Disagree. Leg on leg from behind with no posibility to play the ball. Soft foul but foul :)

    2. Yup that's why I used the word "debatable" and not "wrong"... Either call can be backed in that situation I feel but I would've personally gone for Play-on!!

  18. Massive mass confrontation in Manchester. Hategan showed two RC, one for each team. As far as I can judge it, both correct and for VC. But some replays would be nice to solve it clearly.

    1. And now dissallowed goal for ManU.Fully correct whistle. Clear foul on the defender.

      Delete
    2. I agree technically, however I think he should work on his management of the mass confrontation. Made a very hectical and chaotical impression.

      Delete
    3. Agree with you. I think he was very calm apart from this situation. But this management could be done better, it looked indeed very hectical. I think that was because they didn't expect this right before.

      Delete
    4. Must say on the confrontation Hategan was perfectly positioned to see the hottest point, and indeed say the strike by Bailly and identify the culprit (always the hardest, IMO). I don't know who saw the Roncaglia charge (AR far side?) but again that's very well done. Even better, I can't spot any other VCs in the confrontation itself, so well done to the referee (maybe a YC to Valencia).

Now, after that, it got a bit chaotic as Niclas says. Not sure why he saw the need to sprint to the tunnel - when there's already 10 stewards and staff on side, the referee won't really make a difference.

      Delete
  19. One word for Marciniak: brilliant ! That's refereeing I support and I like. Strong difference from champions league trend refereeing. Just simple : Bravo !

    ReplyDelete
  20. Game over in Manchester! What a finish, Celta Vigo scored 1-1 in 85' and was attacking for the second goal in the dying minutes. Then this mass confrontation, two RC and a dissallowed goal. What a finish in a match in which didn't happen that much until 85'.
Perhaps Hategan missed a few fouls or the one or other YC, but we can say that he has a great personality and is very strict and calm while making very important calls!
My mark would be somewhere around 8.3, but I don't remember each situation, just my feeling about the big picture :)

  21. Ok now, predictions for CL and EL finals:

    Juventus - Real Madrid
    Damir Skomina (SVN)
    Fourth Official: Martin Atkinson (ENG)

    Ajax - Manchester United
    Milorad Mažić (SRB)
    Fourth Official: Gianluca Rocchi (ITA)

    1. Mine are:
      Juventus - Real Madrid
      Damir Skomina (SVN)
      Fourth Official: Ovidiu Hategan (ROU)

      Ajax - Manchester United
      Milorad Mažić (SRB)
      Fourth Official: Deniz Aytekin (GER)

But the decision between Skomina and Mazic is only 60:40 for me. I would not be surprised if they are appointed the other way around.

      Delete
    2. You know my opinion: Skomina Elite referee by years, he got many and many notable games, he was already at the top when Mazic became FIFA referee. The Slovenian was already appointed as FO in CL final some years ago, he deserves this achievement, sometimes I think performances are not everything for such assignments. It would be very particular to see Mazic appointed to CL final and Skomina "only" to EL.

  22. Was there yellow card shown from Hategan before all this confrontation or not?

Because it was obvious that he was holding his yc ...

    ReplyDelete

    1. According to some live tickers there wasn't any YC. Perhaps he wanted to book one of the two players who were sent off, that would be the only explanation to me.

    2. Do you know where I can find his report about issued cards?

    7. As Niclas said earlier Hategan looked confused in that situation. He was holding YC, then trying to reach red card, consulting with ARs, puting YC away and then two reds. Very fuzzy ...

    3. No observers are not appointed that is jus my guess. About Atkinson; yeas it is seems impossible but considering his great form in England and more or less very good european season and the fact England has only one elite referee who is not preselected for World Cup, Atkinson appointment could be reward for him and some kind of compensation to FA.

    4. I don't think Dallas will be appointed again in UCL Final after the final in 2015

Indeed, as already reported by some comments, the Romanian looks a bit chaotical there, in trouble. Situation was surely not easy to face and absolutely unexpected but in my opinion he could have managed that by showing more smoothness.

Three key match points regarding cards:
49', 59' - first YC and possible 2nd YC to Veltman (AJX)
68, 84 - both YCs to Viergever (AJX)
74' - possible 2nd YC to Diakhaby (LYO); I don't know where he received his first YC as UEFA reports 49' and in that minute a YC to Veltman was shown but no visible YC to any other player (maybe in 36' after an advantage?)
