Damir Skomina's Europa League Final (Ajax - ManU)

Damir Skomina and his team will take charge of the UEFA Europa League between AFC Ajax and Manchester United in Solna tonight.

The 40-year old from Koper in Slovenia has already taken charge of the UEFA Super Cup final between Chelsea FC and Atlético Madrid in 2012. With 137 international matches, Skomina belongs to the most experienced international match officials has to offer.

Check his statistics and some background information on his refereeing style in the referee portrait we created prior to UEFA EURO 2016 last year.

In an interview with UEFA.org, Skomina said he and his team felt honoured by their final appointment. He further emphasized the need "to set an example" to the young people following tonight's final. Check the full interview here!

And now - enjoy the game!

  1. Mkhitaryan with 3 fouls in 10-15 min.

Good decision to give him yc.

    1. The foul he got a yellow card for was clearly reckless itself. No choice for Skomina.

    2. Maybe deserved yc forgiven in 47 min.?

    3. Clear YC in 47' missed. Was the handball in 71' deliberate? Rough tackle in 77', potential SFP, what do you think?

Apart from those incidents, full control in an easy-going game for the referee crew. One of the worst UEFA Cup / UEFA Europa League finals.

    4. 77' looks like SFP.
      Penalty for Utd missed?
Situation looked like one of the UEFA Rap clip, when Bartra pushed attacker in front of the Clattenburg and English referee just waved on.

    5. If there is a push, it should have been a penalty. Period.

    6. Live, it looked like play on.

  2. When they were doing the toss of the coin before kick off, one of the match officials had their hands in their pocket and it didn't look good. Rest of the team had their hands behind their back.

    2. No on either of them definitely had their hands in their pockets then went. I am sure it was the 4th official.

    4. I took a photo yesterday and looked at it now. It is Jug, but it only looks like he has hands in his pocket, you are wrong. Btw if he did, where would he put his wand?

    5. I think it was The 4th official but I know for a fact one of them definitely had their hands in their pocket before the toss of the coin, then went away so must not have been Jug but Rocchi

      Delete
    6. If I'm not mistaken, the 4th official isn't present at coin toss ...

I said Jug because at first glance it indeed seems as you were saying, so i thought you were misled there.

  6. All these comments goes to; I would like to find a crucial mistake. Sometimes the situations are easy to handle also because of referees.

    1. Thank you for this constructive feedback.

    2. I wont it to be constructive. I just wont it to say that some type of referees like Skomina make players more calm even in a final match. This is an additional value.

    3. Dear Izo,
I am so happy that after a final nobody is talking about referee performance, which means it was good, big picture is positive.
I'm wondering about some potential mistakes, not to spoil big picture but to hear opinion of visitors.
This blog was made for such things. Personaly, Damir is one of my favourite referees and I'm very happy about his succes tonight.
      Cheers!

    4. Sorry if I was too hard with words and I respect that this blog and whole discussions was made for different opinions at heavy situations, but sometimes things went too far. I am not focusing on today posts only, at all. I am glad also that we have only few "situations " after final match.

    2. My opinions about the two significant incidents are: RC in 77' and penalty in 87'. So on the paper two potential crucial mistakes. However, it was the "classic Skomina" we know, allowing the play to go on and being quite lenient. Nobody will remember these incidents, the game itself was played in a not challenging context, for this reason in my opinion still an OK performance. I think that Skomina would have chosen a a different approach in case of a more challenging game.

    3. RC in 77' by UEFA rules but Skomina decided to only show YC because it was easy match.. For me no penalty in 87', sure there was pushing with one hand but wasnt enough for me..

      Delete
    4. Although I also have a clear tendency I would not call both situations classical black-or-white incidents. Technically, it can be a punishable push - in game-reality, we know that often times this is "not enough" (@Ray, I guess you also remember the push in England-Wales Brych ignored...). Video-refereeing there are arguments for deeming Mata's foul as serious foul play. On the field of play, I understand that yellow was the best possible decision. What I did not understand is that he only issued 1 yellow card in the situation - usually, in such smaller confrontations it is wise to even out disciplinary sanctions between both teams involved. ("surprised" does not mean that it is completely wrong, though).

Apart from that, Skomina did well in the big picture. An easy, partly boring game was sovereignly managed for my taste. He stayed in the background, let the play flow, intervened when needed. That's what I liked. In detail, we can talk about his positioning (often times too far away, not entering the penalty area etc)... but in the end, Skomina won't be remembered after this game and this is already half the battle.

    5. But Skomina has to be at his very best in the upcoming season if he wishes to go for the World Cup in Russia... Competition is really tough so he needs to improve the small points to make an even stronger case for selection!!

  11. Chefren I just think that is announced becouse real announce purple kits, and juventus probably black and white. What is your opinion. One more question, why referees of ucl this season used kits from 2015 2016

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Logically I'd say that Brych and his men will be in the yellow kit!! 🤔

      Delete
    2. Juventus will wear their home jersey having black and white stripes so black kits for referees not possible... Also with Real Madrid wearing that bright purple jersey I think the referee will avoid pink... Yellow seems to be the most likely and the most unique option as well!!

      Delete
  12. Why Soham, I think that brych could use black or blue kits

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I already explained why the black kit is unlikely... You're correct that the blue kit is possible!! So it will be either yellow or blue I'd say :)

  13. Yes black are posiblle just look match dortmund juventus round of 16 2015 black and white stripes by referees and juventus

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'll still say that Brych would most probably avoid black!!

    2. UEFA defines that, the referees have, to my knowledge, no choice but accepting the jerseys they get.
