  1. Today it has been made public by AIA that Rizzoli retired from 2018 WC preselection.
He wrote a letter to AIA's president, Marcello Nicchi, explaining the reasons of his choice.
Here the official news on AIA's site with the letter as PDF:

If you are interested, we will try to manage a translation soon.

    3. In Italy a referee who is not FIFA listed can stay in serie A's panel not more than 10 years, while a FIFA listed referee has not this limit and can stay until the end of age limit (45). If a referee is already 45 before the beginning of a new season, he must retire. Of course, there is the chance to get a derogation, but this is the standard.
Rizzoli turned 45 on last October, so for the next season (without derogation) he should be out. However, the fact that he was confirmed on FIFA list for 2017, makes possible that he will get a special derogation for 2017-18 season in serie A, despite of age limit.
After today's statement, it is not still sure if he will retire at the end of this season (June 2017) or at the end of the next one (June 2018). The fact that he was confirmed on FIFA list for 2017 could be a signal that he will be confirmed as well in serie A for 2017-18, otherwise, in case of retirement at the end of this season, I would't find logical the choice to confirm him on FIFA list only for 6 months (01 - 06 / 2017).
I also think that he could have managed better the end of his career, there were for a long time many doubts about his real will, and perhaps he really wanted to get a chance for Russia 2018, but of course I respect him and that's only my opinion.

    4. Clos Gómez will retire in June and is still on the FIFA list too.

  4. So, Mateu Lahoz with a game on 13/02 in La Liga. But of course, knowing RFEF-CTA, we can't rule him out from Wednesday's CL match between Bayern and Arsenal. There are only a few options for Spanish referees, and after Batta's observation in Lisbon on MD6, this match would suit.

  5. Howard Webb is moving to United States and he offers Marciniak to become an MLS referee.

Either VAR or AAR at 2018 FIFA World Cup.

There's a discussion among UEFA Referees Committee and top-5 leagues (ENG, ESP, FRA, GER, ITA) to allow best UEFA Elite Group referees handle top clashes in those leagues.

      Delete
    3. @Chefren, Joachem Kamphuis, Ed Janssen and Denis Higler are possible names for Kuipers' AAR... Also Danny Makkelie is a possibility for big games considering the fact he was Kuipers' AAR in the Manchester City v Borussia Mönchengladbach CL tie!!

      Delete
    4. I remember Janssen being out with Kuipers at Fulham - Juventus (UEL 2010) as AAR2, personally he would be my choice. He a fantastic referee in my opinion, would have been very interesting to see him in UEFA because I honestly think he would have been one of the best. Although maybe Kamphuis is more likely, he was with Makkelie at U21 EURO 2015 for instance - I would be surprised to see Higler honestly.

  10. Big protests from Inter fans and players about Rizzoli's decision making in Derby d'Italia, some of them are saying that there should have been 2-3 penalties for them.
I personally love Inter and I am their fan,and to me Rizzoli didn't have any crucial mistakes, derbys will always be hard to control, especially Italians where there is so much passion and emotion, but overall I thought Rizzoli did a good job in that match.
And after match ended Inter player,Icardi, shoot a ball at him which was totally disrespectful.

  13. I don't know if you have seen this article on fifa.com. It is about Hamdi Al Kadri from Syria, now 51. He was reserve assistant in Khail Al Ghamdi team in World Cup 2006 Germany and also in Al Ghamdi's team in Bejing, AFC CL, ... He has 3 matches on EURO U-21, even he is not from Europe. Since there is a war in Syria he moved to Germany and now is refereeing local leagues. This story is proof that once a referee, always a referee. This is a job you must love. And also, good luck to Mr Al Kadri in his new life.

I also heard that a goal was wrongly disallowed by AR2, bad luck for Atletico.

    1. If I'm not wrong, it was AR1, FIFA Assistant Referee Ángel Nevado Rodríguez.

For me, Gil Manzano's performance has been great. I did not watch the first 30 minutes or so, but all 2nd yellow card are right for me, the penalty is OK too and maybe the very last foul could have been SFP, but I think it was almost impossible to spot from behind. All in all, I think it was a good and brave performance and a really entertaining match to watch.

    2. Well, for there was a problem in added time. He gave 5 minutes additional time, and I dont know if even 2 or 3 minutes were played in that period. There was Messi's injury and on that was wasted 3 to 4 minutes, but as soon as Messi got up, Gil blew the whistle.

    2. If Marciniak is appointed for PSG v BAR or maybe BAY v ARS, my question is does Marciniak need an observer like Fandel or Rosetti considering the kind of perfect season he has been having??

      Delete
    3. @Soham

Would it not suggest that he is considered for something big at the end of the season maybe. Solnå or Cardiff?....

      Delete
    4. Marciniak at moment is the first candidate for EL final in my opinion.
A committee member would be justified for that.

      Delete
    5. Ok now I understand that... What about Milorad Mazic and Damir Skomina when it comes to appointments to a final?? These 2 have seemed to do a good job for a number of years but unfortunately no final for either of them yet... Won't they get their chances?? 😖

      Delete
    6. As for me, i see Skomina as a possible candidate for UEL final minimum. Lets see what matches he will be given at 1/8 of UCL :)

      Delete
    7. It could be that if Bayern don't qualify for the final, UEFA might use the opportunity to choose a German for UCL final, of course depending on the performance level shown. Otherwise, Skomina is a very good guess. Marciniak is a candidate for UEL final in my view.

    1. About Trentalange, after the radical change of FIFA referees committee and his apparent removal, it will be interesting to know how much importance he will still have as observer.
However, still about FIFA referees committee, it seems as something is still in progress, as you can read directly on the page:

    2. I have to agree, Gitzlo. One of the strongest performances of this season. Around 6-7 yellow cards for SPA, very consistent line and, above all, fantastic body language and communication. At the end, a very good 2nd YC for dissent, worth to watch definitely.

The only point of criticism: In the penalty shoot out, Dortmund's goalkeeper encroached 1-2 times and saved a ball due to that...

    4. Excellent Aytekin when he explained the reason of the whistle for the disallowed goal: when keeper has a hand on the ball, according to LotG he has the possession of the ball, so it was a clear foul by Aubameyang, I must say this was not easy to detect.

      Delete
    5. Excellent as well when he issued the second YC for dissent, most of the referees there would have ignored the persistence of this behavior.

      Delete
    6. In general, until maybe last season, Aytekin was rather known as a strict referee maintaining a certain distance to the players.

For some time - and specially yesterday - he showed a very empathic approach to the players, very good game-understanding and excellent body language. It was simply impressive how he even sold unpopular decisions in front of 80000 supporters.

    7. @George,I think that was average from Lahoz...

Too much shoving and provoking between players that he didn't punish with booking, especially Devyerson and Cabral, how those two didn't get yc I still don't know,I mean Devyerson was in every possible incident, too much time was wasted and he didn't book one Alaves player for that reason.
So to me,his card managament was not good in this match.

In addition, his regular AR, Passeri, has a game this evening. Costanzo, the other AR is out from appointments. Irrati, who could be AAR, has been appointed this evening as AAR as well. So in case, Benfica - Borussia Dortmund would be for him. The observer would suit, Lemmer (LUX) is very often appointed with experienced Elite.

    Deflection of deliberate play?

Very interesting case, I think that defender tried a deliberate play by head.
Indeed, Passeri didn't raise his flag. I think correct decision.

    1. Difficult difficult. Due to the replay stopped at the moment of the pass (the full speed of the action was of course much higher than the replay), it is not easy to say whether it was a really deliberate header or rather an intuitive reaction or even reflex. I am a bit torn to be honest.

    2. A bit similar to Victor's decision posted above (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpsCBEqCh6E)
I think, the referees can be backed in both situations.
Wouldn't be a reflex also be considered as deliberate here?

      Delete
    3. Actually reflexes and intuitive reactions are indicating deflections according to the guidelines.

    4. Very good decision, IMO it's deliberate play.
Of course, AR should be backed in any case.

    2. In my opinion this is a punishable handball, more than an accidental touch because the position of the arm favoured the player in scoring the goal.
I think that Clattenburg from his position missed it, AAR would have helped and disallowed the goal, in Champions League this shouldn't happen.

      Delete
    3. @Whistle2: For me it is...

LOTG: Deliberate handball (unnatural position of the hand)
      Common sense: Disallow the goal.

I am confident that Clatts would have done so if he had seen it properly. AR1 could have been a support, maybe.

    1. You already know my opinions about the goal scored by hand and the handball DOGSO, on the rest:
      2) In my opinion, DOGSO. Without the foul, player from Hull City would have controlled the ball without problems and then he would have had an obvious goal scoring opportunity, being alone in running towards penalty area. But I think that Clattenburg was convinced by the distance from the goal in this case.

      Sheffield Wednesday - Birmingham City:
It is a clear SFP, but, as we often discussed, difficult to spot live, in the meaning that referee can just have the impression of a foot on foot - challenge, and nothing more. The replay shows us that it was a shocking challenge, directly on the leg of the opponent, with studs up.

      Delete
    2. Howard Webb says it wasn't a deliberate handball and the goal rightly stood. The foul on Marković (situation no. 2) is more a red card than yellow to Howard.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKOkkiEb-M0

      Delete
    3. 1) The biggest arguments for no del. handball is the short distance and reaction time and that the hand was high but maybe in a player-typical position. For my personal taste, having the hand that highly cannot be justified by being in a player-typical position. At some point it becomes rather unnatural and I think this was the case here.

      2) Rather DOGSO as he would have very likely controlled the ball from his chest. For Clatts this was probably not visible so that he thought the ball was not under control and maybe also difficult to control.

      3) Clear one

      4) Clear SFP and AR2 could maybe have seen it better from his angle.

    Punishable offside?
You can see that the AR involved (Stefano Alassio) was about to raise the flag, but he changed idea. Referee (Carmine Russo) decided to whistle the offside by himself, considering the player as punishable.
I think that AR was right in his decision to play on, while referee made a mistake, by forcing this call: player from Crotone didn't touch the ball.
