  2. In addition to Soares Dias appointment for Italy - Germany in Milan on 15/11, the same Portuguese crew with different assistant referees will be in the middle for the Under 21 friendly Italy - Denmark, to be played in Bergamo (not so far away from Milan, still in Lombardia) the day before (14/11).
This match will be used as test for VAR, as well.

Assistant Referee 2: Jorge Moreira de Sousa (POR)

      The referees involved are:
      Artur Manuel Ribeiro Soares Dias
Hugo Filipe Ferreira Campos Moreira Miguel
Manuel Jorge Neves Moreira de Sousa

      The assistant referees involved are:
      Luís André Ferreira Pinto Campos
      Paulo Alexandre Santos Soares
      Rui Licínio Barbosa Tavares

But there is no assistant referee named Jorge Moreira de Sousa. It matches only with UEFA 1st Category Manuel Jorge Neves Moreira de Sousa...

    6. Thanks. As we can point out, many federations don't ask for foreign referees when there is an Under 21 friendly, the games are handled by local officials. This, however, doesn't happen when there is a notable clash, like Poland - Germany of France - England. About the latter, any idea of the referee in the middle for this evening?

  18. Kuipers in POL-SVN

    - good no-penalty call after an undeliberate handball in the Polish box - defender slided to block a shot and the ball bounced off his hip before touching a hand (50')
    - Sander van Roekel denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity with a wrong offside call but in a very difficult situation (contrary movements); perhaps it should even be assessed as an acceptable call(?) (89')
    - big problems with the use of advantage: at least two were unnecessary, sorry, just wrongly given (41', 43'; he apparently wanted to continue the annoying trend we observed at Euro 2016)
    - a reckless foul of Teodorczyk (+ mandatory yellow card) missed near the benches (20')
    - quite random foul detection/selection through the whole game.

Sorry, am I wrong, or this is a more than blatant offside? Perhaps AR assessed the touch by defender as deliberate play, but following a shot on goal, this was impossible.

    2. No YC to Vardy in 6' was another example of a very bad trend in UEFA refereeing. You may even break someone's leg at the beginning of the game and you will get away with a warning anyway...

      Delete
    3. It truly saddens me to see the current blatant disregard for The Laws of the Game. No blood, nothing broken = no cards. Shameful, truly shameful. If referees are going to discard the Laws because it's a "friendly". Then perhaps just let the teams go at it minus the referees.

  28. One question: Why goes AR1 to the midline in case of a substitution? I think that the fourth official is able to handle that alone. ;)
Does anybody know the reason for that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. According to LotG, AR must always signalize when a team wants to make a substitution, and cooperate during it even when fourth official is there.
Assistant referee takes note of the substitution as well.

      Delete
    2. Thank you, Chefren.
I recognized now that the AR only goes to the midline when there are two substitution at the same time, because now he didn't when there was only one.
I think there is a special order for this situations.

I saw that in AUT-SVK, the Dutch crew wasn't challenged at all. Expected level performance in an fair and boring match without YC.

    3. Interesting words from Busacca; he said that the goal was disallowed also by the VAR. Infact Volland was offside with his knee according to the referees. It took just five seconds to decide. I think it would be better if that decision was shown also to the audience and the teams during the match, like in a rugby match

    2. I would not be surprised if Hategan did indeed under-punish an incident. He showed a complete lack of conviction and personality throughout the entire match. But can we truly blame Hategan? He's simply following orders, isn't he? I'm sure Bussaca is pleased with his permissive performance.

  32. I've seen a refereeing-specialised spanish twitter account report that Hategan has made an offside call from a goal kick. I have not seen the full incident. Source: https://twitter.com/lparbitrofutbol

    3. Ok, I found the situation. AR involved is AR1 Şovre. Unluckily the broadcaster decides to show Vardy on the bench, missing the resume of the game by Hațegan, I guess by a dropped ball.

  33. Hategan in England/Spain. Prime example of how overrated the "talk and manage" approach is. Nothing broken or no blood = No Card and the Laws of the Game go right out the window. Bravo to those "higher ups" who preach this rubbish approach to refereeing. But on the bright side, the thugs and goons in Football are rejoicing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I checked all the incidents of ENG - ESP: Vardy's challenge in the 5' minute can be easily a RC, no card is definitely a heavy mistake by Hategan. Problem is always the same: game is a friendly so one seems to be allowed to think that cards shouldn't be shown. But Vardy clearly endangered the safety of the opponent. Warning is absolutely meaningless. We can't wait for broken legs. Sorry, I must say that.
About the incident involving Aspas, indeed he pushes the AR from behind with a certain force, however still a RC because officials can't be touched in any way by players. AR is the first responsible, he had to inform Hategan about the RC (not YC). The challenge by Carvajal in the 75' can look like a RC as well, but in this case one can close his eyes accepting a YC (at least this time Hategan showed it).
Well, what I can say is that saving cards in the early minutes of a game, in front of such challenges, and allowing physical play with dangerous tackles and so on, is always a wrong choice. Referees must abandon this trend.
Finally a message for you, Nando Vasquez: you use always strong terms, but I can't deny that you are right in your contents, to be honest.

    1. Chefren, I agree that I should measure my words from time to time. But I guess that the emotions in my words. Stem from the utter frustration that I feel when I see things like this. But like I said before. Can we truly blame the individual referees? Or are they simply applying the Law in the manner that they are told.

  35. Soares Dias, by the way, showed why he is one of UEFA's next top officials. Have already seen him in S04-Praha live last year, where he made the impression of an experienced Elite referee (calm and completely sovereign).

Very strong performance yesterday, with a great simulation decision (Gündogan, around 83'). Only 1 mistake: unsporting behaviour by Immobile had to be cautioned shortly before half-time (and in that case maybe he should have cautioned Kimmich for provoking as well).

One point for improvement: he should be careful about his touching behaviour and spatial relations to players. When reacting to protests following a free-kick for Italy, he literally punched Gündogan in his throat/facial area with his outstretched arm...

Busacca was in the stadium yesterday and I guess will have been very content about the performance of the Portuguese team (excellent ARs, too).

    1. I agree about yesterday
It's an interesting situation, because UEFA seems to prefer de Sousa (looking at appointments), while FIFA has chosen Soares Dias for the pre-list.
